Gold was first found in the Blue River Valley in 1859, and Breckenridge was born.
Since those exciting days, other precious fields have been discovered. Our unique lodge is located on the actual mining claim of Hunt Placer. Placer mining methods were used to recover gold nuggets and flakes that had been eroded from the rocks of the surrounding mountains and had been deposited in streams and rivers. Since gold is a very heavy mineral, it tended to sink to the lower layers of gravels and other stream sediments. |
Placer miners used equipment that took advantage of this "heaviness" to separate and recover the gold
from the stream deposits. Placer mining involved the use of water under high pressure to loosen gravel from
the hillsides, which was then run through sluice boxes to filter out the gold. All mining was done at
ground surface; no underground operations were performed in a typical placer mine. Next door to the Lodge, you will find Colorado's only placer mining park, the Summit Historical Society's restored Lomax Placer Gulch, which includes an assay office and a miner's cabin. The Lomax Mine has a complete collection of the equipment used in a typical hydraulic mining operation. |

Our building was constructed from the ground up as an exculsive lodge.
Carl and Gwen Ray picked out the historic site and were integral to the design and construction of the building.
After almost 2 years of trials and tribulations, the Skiway Lodge was opened for business in 1994 as the Hunt Placer Inn Bed and Breakfast. Since then we have added paved parking, two luxurious hot tubs and redwood deck out back, gas fire pit, plush robes, comfy slippers, HD TVs, hairdryers, coffee makers, refrigerators, microwaves, and multi-line telephones with data ports in all the guestrooms. We also have wireless internet access throughout the building which is a free amenity to our guests. We have created three lounge areas, one including game tables with plenty of mountain ambiance. The Skiway Lodge also has Ski-In and Ski-Out access to the new gondola. |
Whether you’re here to relax or to indulge in every outdoor activity Summit County has to offer, we invite
you to enjoy the hospitality of the Skiway Lodge. End your day in front of the fire, lounging in the
therapeutic currents of the hot tub or sharing a bottle of wine on the privacy of you balcony. Why not do
it all! Click here for Our Rooms |
